Three girls latest suspected bird flu, SARS cases in Hong Kong
Health chiefs have indicated that three young girls are the latest suspected SARS and bird flu cases to be put in isolation in Hong Kong, where 323 people have been tested for the killer diseases since early January. The girls, aged three, 11 and 17, are being tested for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and bird flu after being admitted to hospital with fever, coughs and runny noses.
All had returned from the Chinese mainland in the past 10 days. They are in stable condition in the city's Princess Margaret Hospital.
Since stringent health checks were put in place on Jan 5 following a resurgence of SARS in China's neighboring Guangdong province, 323 suspected victims have been tested in isolation wards. No cases have been confirmed.
In a bid to keep SARS and bird flu from the city, Hong Kong has imposed strict health surveillance on arriving travelers, especially from mainland China. It has also ordered anyone who develops a fever within 10 days of returning from China to immediately report to hospital.

China Grants Vietnam Emergency Anti-Bird Flu Aid
The Chinese government has granted an emergency aid of 100,000 US dollars to Vietnam to help the country deal with bird flu, which has appeared in 57 out of its 64 localities. A Chinese delegation led by a deputy minister of health is scheduled to arrive in Vietnam in March 2004.
Nguyen Phu Binh, Vietnamese deputy minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highly appreciated the timely assistance of the Chinese government and people. He said that a number of institutes and companies of China have assisted or pledged to support Vietnam in terms of equipment and medicines.
The agriculture ministries of China and Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in many fields, including veterinarian cooperation on Monday. Accordingly, the ministries will jointly work out measures to treat animal diseases, tighten management of veterinarian hygiene, and prevent the outbreak and spread of diseases in bordering areas.
Bird flu has hit 60 per cent of Vietnam's total districts and towns, killing 30 million fowls, or nearly 12 per cent of its poultry population.

Shanghai in East China is expected to host an international medical forum from February 28 to March 1, with the theme of construction and development of modern hospitals. The "International Symposium on Medicine in the 21st Century" will attract hospital management experts and investors both at home and abroad, said Cheng Jianping, deputy director of the Shanghai municipal health bureau.
During the symposium, experts and investors will share their perspectives on management and development of modern hospitals. Chinese Vice-Minister of Health Zhu Qingsheng and Professor Donald Palmisano, chairman of the American Medical Association (AMA), will make keynote speeches at the forum on the development of hospitals and medical centers in the delta area of the Yangtze River, an economic powerhouse with Shanghai at the center. Also on the agenda of the symposium is the exchange and cooperation between the Houston Medical Center of the United States, the world's largest medical research center, and Shanghai's medical research institutions. In addition, hospital managers and investors will exchange views on both challenges and opportunities of private investors' involvement in China's medical service sector, which is currently dominated by state-funded hospitals.
