Chinese Customs Uncover Largest Case of Fake Viagra in Asia
The largest batch of counterfeit Viagra pills in Asia has been seized in eastern China.
Approximately 240,000 fake versions of the sex-enhancing Viagra pill were found by Customs officials in China. A man residing in the eastern city of Nanjing was arrested in connection with the seizure of the drugs and confessed to planning to sell them.
The case, jointly conducted by Customs officials in Tianjin and Shanghai, involved 90,000 pills found in Tianjin and 150,000 more pills in Shanghai.
Li had supposedly declared the pills as "pearl calcium". Pfizer, the legitimate manufacturer of Viagra, says the recent capture is the largest case of counterfeit Viagra pills in Asia so far.

China to Strengthen Fight Against Tuberculosis
A senior health official in China recently said that the country will set up an efficient and ongoing medical infrastructure to fight against tuberculosis, with an ultimate goal of curing four million tuberculosis patients by 2010.
Yin Dakui, Vice Minister of Health, made the statement at a national meeting of anti-phtisis being held in the capital of the southwestern China Guizhou Province.
According to Yin, China is one of 22 countries in the world which suffer from severe tuberculosis. Latest statistics show that there are presently five million tuberculosis patients in China, accounting for 56% of the total number of tuberculosis patients in the Western Pacific Region.
The Ministry of Health and some related ministries have prepared a ten-year plan to control the disease. So far, China has utilized loans from the World Bank to carry out tuberculosis treatment projects for 560 million people in 13 provinces across the country.
In addition, the country will invest RMB 40 million (US $4.8 million) annually to establish a special foundation to prevent and control the spread of the disease.

Locally Produced Anti-AIDS Drug Promising
A drug recently produced by the Northeast Pharmaceutical Factory in China's northeast Liaoning Province has brought hope to China's acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) sufferers.
Zidovudine or AZT, the first AIDS drug to gain approval for large-scale, worldwide production, has proven effective in reducing mother-to-child transmission of the virus. In the past, due to a lack of locally produced AIDS drugs, many patients in China have had to use imported AZT drugs which have an annual cost of RMB 70,000 (US $8,434) per person.
At the end of 2000, China was reported to have 22,517 people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. As most of those afflicted live in rural or poverty-stricken areas, drug costs have been far out of reach for most AIDS sufferers.
Analysts believe that the lower-priced AZT produced by the Northeast Pharmaceutical Factory, which some sources say has already been exported, has a higher curative effect and will greatly ease patients' symptoms.
It has been learned that related sectors will use their technical advantages to develop more derivatives of the drug and build the nation's first anti-AIDS drug base.
There are currently 17 varieties of anti-AIDS drugs in the world, seven of which have been imported by China.

China Bone Marrow Bank Expanding Donor Pool
The China Bone Marrow Bank is planning to expand its database of bone marrow to 100,000 people within five years.
The plan calls for the national bone marrow bank to improve storage facilities and establish bone marrow transplant centers in a third of the nation's provinces and municipalities.
Roughly 4 people per 1000 suffer from Leukemia in China. There are currently four million people in China waiting for bone marrow transplants as the number of cases of Leukemia increases by 40,000 per year.
Because of a shortage of blood donors and a low rate of successful blood matches suitable for transfusions, many people are forced to seek marrow matches from abroad.
Bone-marrow transplants help leukemia patients rebuild their weakened blood systems. Presently there are only about 30,000 registered blood donors in China, much lower than the 3.7 million registered donors in Europe.
It is hoped that the bone-marrow bank will collect 100,000 marrow donors in order to create a standard data retrieval system of bone marrow donors.
The China Bone Marrow Bank is the only marrow bank at the national level and was initiated by the Red Cross Society of China.
In order to gain support for donations, a large benefit concert will be held in the eastern Zhejaing province with proceeds going directly to the China Marrow Bank.

Chindex Approved to Build Second Hospital
The Chinese Ministry of Health has approved Chindex's plans for the building of a new hospital in Shanghai.
Chindex International Inc., an American company providing Western medical and healthcare products and services in China, opened their first hospital, the Beijing United Family Hospital, in 1997.
"Following the tremendous success we have had with our first hospital, Beijing United, we are now ready for the next step in the development of the Chindex Healthcare Network" said Roberta Lipson, President and CEO of Chindex speaking in Beijing about the upcoming plans for the Shanghai United Family Hospital.
The hospital will be a joint venture between Chindex and Changning District Central Hospital, with the American company as a majority holder of shares. It will be modeled after the Beijing hospital.
"The system offers international healthcare services at a profitable return for the company, and also extends this quality of service into the huge local Chinese market. We believe the growth potential to be tremendous, " Lipson said, "Future Chindex hospitals are in the planning stages now as well."
If all goes according to plan, it is hoped that the 50-bed hospital will open in 2002.
