The Regulations for the protection of computer software were formulated and enacted in 1991. From May, 1 1992, the China Computer Software Registration Center begin to accept applications for software registration. At present, over 9,100 items of software have been registered. The non-substance examination system is applied. The average processing term for a registration is 2 months. With the efforts of China to accede to the WTO, the protection period for software has been extended from 25 to 50 years.
