Edward Lehman is “an old China hand” with a long history in the People’s Republic. On June 4, 1989, during the uprising in Tiananmen Square, Lehman was the only foreigner to refuse American Embassy sponsored evacuation from the mainland. When Lord, Bissell & Brook made the decision to pull out of China for insurance reasons, Lehman joined a Chinese government run law office, and remained in China. In 1992, after the Chinese government permitted private law firms, Lehman and three other Chinese legal professionals founded Lehman, Lee & Xu, the eighth foreign law firm established in Mainland China. Mr. Lehman now holds the distinction of being the longest serving Managing Director of any law firm in the People’s Republic of China for the past 21+ consecutive years.

Over the past more than two decades, Lehman Lee & Xu has established itself as the premier law firm in the region. From a single office, Lehman, Lee & Xu  has expanded to include affiliated operations serving most of China’s major urban areas, but Macau, Hong Kong, and Mongolia as well.

Lehman, Lee & Xu represents many of the world’s most successful multinational corporations, financial institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and government agencies in a wide range of their operations. LLX’s fields of expertise include: foreign direct investment, taxes, corporate commercial, finance, patents, trademark law and mining law. In addition, as part of a pro bono program, Lehman Lee & Xu has provided representation to criminal defendants.

Taken together, all these factors made Edward Lehman a strong candidate for this year’s award. “I’m honored to be selected and included in this fine group of professionals”, Lehman commented. “It has been a great 26 years here in China, and I’m looking forward to the next twenty six.”
