Hong Kong Marks 10th Anniversary of Return
Hong Kong – July 1, 2007
The Tenth Anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, which the government marked today with great pomp and ceremony, underscored the many changes that the former British colony has undergone in the past decade.
Its economy, for example, has become far more intertwined with that of the Mainland. As President Hu Jintao arrived to celebrate the occasion and to appoint the next administrator of this Special Administrative Region, he also opened a new bridge linking the SAR with Shenzhen, the boom town just on the Mainland side.
Pro-democracy activists staged a march without interference from the police. In his speech, President Hu pointed to the occasion as evidence that China's policy of "one country, two systems" has been a success. President Hu also emphasized the importance of the rule of law in maintaining Hong Kong's prosperity.
