Nanchang is the capital of Jiangxi Province in southeastern China. Famous for its scenic lakes, mountains, and cultural sites, Nanchang is also an ancient city with a rich history of more than two thousand years.
At the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Nanchang was essentially undeveloped, with a population of 275,000 and little industry apart from food processing. Since 1949 Nanchang has become extensively industrialized and is now a large producer of cotton textiles and cotton yarn, papermaking, food processing, rice milling, agricultural machinery, diesel engines, automobiles, trucks, industrial chemicals, agricultural chemicals, insecticides, tires, iron smelting, and pharmaceuticals. Foreign multinationals have invested extensively in Nanchang, including the Ford Motor Company which has a plant in the city assembling the Ford Transit van as part of the Jiangling Motor joint venture.
Jiangxi Province is also rich in both agricultural products and minerals. Primary crops include rice, cotton and rapeseed and primary mining activities center around copper, tungsten, gold, silver, uranium, thorium, tantalum, niobium, among others.
