Capital of Heilongjiang province in northeast China, Harbin is the tenth largest city in China. It serves as a key political, economic, scientific, cultural and communications center for all of northeast China.
Harbin is strongly influenced by the Siberian cold and wind during the winter months. Since 1963, Harbin has been famous for its Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, held annually every February. Harbin will also be the host city of the 2009 Winter Universiade. Harbin plans to spend US$ 1.5 billion in construction and renovation of its sport infrastructure for this Universiade.
Heilongjiang Province has a broad based economy based on agriculture, wood and timber production, petroleum and energy production and manufacturing.
Heilongjiang’s agriculture is heavily influenced by its cold climate and the primary crops are soybeans, corn, wheat, beets, flax, and sunflowers. Heilongjiang is also an important source of lumber for China, including pine, Korean pine, and larch. In addition, Helongjiang is a center for animal production in China, especially horses and cattle, and has the greatest number of milk cows and the highest production of milk in China.
Petroleum, energy production, and mining are also large industries in Heilongjiang. The nearby Daqing oilfields have been China’s primary source of petroleum since the founding of the People’s Republic. However, with China’s ever increasing need for electricity, the government is encouraging alternative sources of energy. Heilongjiang has great potential for wind power, with an average wind energy density of 200 watts per square metre. Heilongjiang also has large mining operations, particularly for coal, gold, and graphite.
Due to its location, Heilongjiang serves as an important gateway for trade with Russia.
