Guangzhou is the Southern China metropolis city previously referred to as “Canton”.
Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province, and the center of its political, economic, scientific, educational and cultural life. It is located north of the Pearl River Delta, and close to South China Sea, Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Macau. The Pearl River, the third largest river of China, runs through Guangzhou and is a trade passage to the South China Sea. Situated in such an excellent geographical region, Guangzhou is called China's South Gate.
As a major sea port, Guangzhou's has long and interesting economic history. Notably, in 1711, the famous British East India Company established a trading post there. In 1842 after the signing of the Treaty of Nanjing, Guangzhou was designated as one of the five ports that allowed business transactions with foreign nations.
Twice a year, Guangzhou hosts one of the most famous trade fairs in the world, the Canton Fair (China Export Commodities Fair). It has been running since 1957, and today remains an extremely important contact point for traders wishing to source products in China.
